The Polish manufacturer tedee presented its smart and stylish Smart Locks for certification for the fourth time this year. Last year, tedee expanded its solution with the GO version of its Smart Lock, which also successfully passed certification without any problems and became the third certified product in the tedee family alongside the tedee PRO and the tedee Bridge. This year, the so-called tedee Dry Contact control module is also being added, promising a further useful addition to the solution and an expansion of the functionality of the Smart Locks.
The two lock variants from tedee, the PRO and the GO, like pretty much all other smart locks on the market, are usually controlled via the corresponding mobile applications, either locally via Bluetooth or remotely via the Internet. However, there are also applications where operation via a mechanical switch would be desirable, for example at reception desks or similar, without having to use the app every time. This is precisely the case for which tedee has now added the Dry Contact control module to its range. This matchbox-sized module can be connected to a compatible battery-operated or wired switch and paired with a tedee Smart Lock. The Smart Lock can then be unlocked with this switch – directly via Bluetooth between Dry Contact control module and Smart Lock and without the detour via the Internet. An online connection is therefore also not necessary.
The Bluetooth protocol used for communication with the Dry Contact control module is the same as that used directly between the application and Smart Locks. There have been no indications of any security problems here in recent years and the integration of the Dry Contacts control module into the tedee system does not change this.
Apart from that, all other components, i.e. GO, PRO and Bridge, together with the mobile apps for Android and iOS, are still at an absolutely solid level in terms of security and do not provide any reason for serious criticism in the current versions.
In the area of privacy and data protection, there are still a few formal points relating to minor inconsistencies between the various privacy policy versions in the app stores and the apps themselves, and transparency could also be further increased by including more detailed information in the privacy policy. However, these points are rather high-level comments and therefore had little influence on the result of the certification.
Overall, the tedee solution is security-wisen still one of the highest quality Smart Lock solutions on the market and proves this year after year in our certification tests. The addition of the Dry Contact control module is a useful expansion to the functionality without creating significant new attack surface. Accordingly, we gladly award our “Approved IoT Product” certificate for another year. Congratulations!
